Upcoming auditions

The Real Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard - Directed by Mikhail Franklin

  • Readthroughs: Tues 14 Apr 19.30-22.00 and Sat 18 Apr 11.00-13.00
  • Auditions: Sun 26 Apr 14.00-17.00 and Thurs 30 Apr 19.45-22.00
  • Performance: 18-21 November

Tom Stoppard’s absurd take on murder mysteries, theatre and reality itself. A play within a play with intrigue, slapstick, fast dialogue and stilted characters. It begins with two theatre critics reviewing what promises to be a stock murder mystery and dissolves into chaos. Essentially, it’s Agatha Christie performed by the Marx Brothers...

Characters

  • Moon  - young critic neurotic and insecure
  • Birdboot - older critic seasoned, pompous and above all lecherous
  • Mrs Drudge - housekeeper. Effectively the chorus/narrator. Lynchpin of play. Deadpan but hilarious
  • Simon - a madman and murderer or just lost and in love?
  • Felicity - love interest at least at first encounter
  • ynthia - also love interest AND Felicity’s mother…….
  • Magnus - erratic and quite deranged - switches roles frantically towards the climax
  • Inspector Hound - bungling and utterly incompetent to the point of embarrassment. Apparently.
  • Dead body - that’s about all really.

From the director:

"The plot splinters in all directions and actors change roles within this berserk one act.  Even the supposedly aloof critics find themselves on stage.  Actors take over from them. I did this play as a young man, still love it and I think you will too. I’ve not specified ages though I envisage Birdboot and Mrs. Drudge (possibly Hound too) to be somewhat older than the rest of the cast. I’m looking for energy, enthusiasm and a sense of fun in performance.  If you need further information or to discuss please do contact me first on m.n.franklin60@gmail.com and we can then chat on phone."
