-

On this exciting walking tour with Terry’s Reading Walkabouts, we will explore the history of Castle Hill, Old and New Coley whilst playing Beat the Street. At this event you will get double points on every Beat Box we visit! You will be able to collect your free Beat the Street card at the event, if you haven’t got one yet. Learn more about Beat the Street: https://www.beatthestreet.me/westreading/

Illustrations and images will be used to explain the history and the changes to the area (from Mansions to very poor ‘courts’ housing), the lost industries, people and some fascinating facts.

We will meet at the bottom of Castle Hill (junction with Coley Place) and will finish at Castle Hill junction with Field Road. The tour will depart at 10am sharp but please arrive at 9:50 for a safety brief.

All ages welcome. Under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult. Please book a free spot for all attendees (including children). Buggies and friendly dogs on a lead are allowed.

Along the route there will be a few short inclines & descents. Please contact chloe.allison@intelligenthealth.co.uk if you have any mobility requirements.

There is no parking right by the meeting spot. We recommend walking or coming by public transport. The meeting spot is about a 10-minute walk away from the town centre. Please note that there are no toilets on the route.

This event is free, but for every attendee money will be donated by Beat the Street to Terry’s Reading Walkabouts’ chosen good causes: Home-Start Reading and The Reading Ukrainian Community Centre.

Home-Start Reading - supports families in Reading through difficult times, to help parents give their children the best possible start in life. Their trained volunteers, mostly parents themselves, work alongside their expert support team to help families with young children, who are struggling due to a range of reasons. These might include low mood, depression, anxiety, ill health, disability, broken relationships, bereavement, domestic abuse, poor housing or financial hardship. The parents may be feeling overwhelmed and isolated and lack the self-confidence and strategies to break the cycle. Home-Start Reading helps to build their capabilities, connections and resilience, giving children the chance to thrive, have a happier future and enjoy the same opportunities as others. https://www.home-start-reading.org.uk/

The Reading Ukrainian Community Centre - houses the Berkshire branch of the Association of Ukrainians in GB (AUGB). Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine last February, the Centre has concentrated its activities to support Ukrainians arriving in the UK, while also delivering equipment and humanitarian aid to those on the frontline. Weekly coffee mornings are held at the Centre, giving Ukrainians new to Reading and their host families an opportunity to meet & chat with fellow Ukrainians & members of the community. Additionally, we host regular events to provide advice and support around topics such as employment and housing. https://www.rucc.uk/news
