Seeds and Bulbs: the Suttons Story

A talk for Reading u3a by Richard Marks

Suttons Seeds were a household name for 200 years, gardeners trusting the reliability of their seeds. In this talk local historian Richard Marks will explore the history of Suttons from humble beginnings in 1806 through to becoming an important part of Britain's horticultural industry and a major exporter across the globe. How did Suttons gain the reputation for reliability and quality that came to be a cornerstone of its brand? Come along to find out.

Richard is a historian based in Berkshire with publications on industrial, military and railway history and who is currently researching industrial development in the Victorian era. He holds a PhD in economic history from the University of Reading and is a regular speaker at family history societies, local history groups and heritage organisations.

Just like Reading u3a, Richard’s aim is to educate and entertain, leaving the audience with a new perspective and wanting to learn more. Reading u3a is delighted to be hosting him for this open meeting – free entry, all welcome.
