Fobney Water Turbine House

Heritage Open Days 2023

Sun 10 Sep from 10am

The first record we have of Fobney is from 1360, about a grant of one acre of land at ‘Vobeneye’ or ‘Vobens Eye’ a reference to the name of its Dutch landowner. From here we assume it became ‘Fobney’.

We know lots about its past thanks to Alexander Walker (1835–1905) and his eldest son Leslie, who was just four years old when Fobney was built. They were both the live-in managers of the old Reading Waterworks for many years, and they kept a detailed scrapbook of newspaper cuttings* that provide us with a rich history of the pumping station as it was then.
