Altered book hour - Bookface special edition

For September 2024, this workshop will be on Fri 13th to coincide with the Bookface art fair at the Rising Sun Arts Centre, and an exhibition of altered books by artist and friend, the late Mary Riley. Mary's altered books can be viewed at the centre from 3pm-6pm on the same day, and participants arriving early for Altered Book Hour will have a chance to see the books before we start.

In this informal mixed media workshop, learn about altered books and start your own with materials provided by your hosts - or bring your own existing book, and work on it with company! Each month your hosts bring a different collage material and paper folding/cutting technique to try.

An altered book is an artwork created by changing any existing printed book in some way. We'll provide you with plenty of collage materials and art supplies, but you can also bring along any materials you like to add to your book; your own photographs, paper collage, pens, and drawing materials. We will explore collaging, drawing, painting, and paper folding techniques to alter your book pages. Old books to use in starting a project, paper collage materials, glue, scissors, washi tape and pens/pencils/paint will be available for you to use.

This workshop is suitable for people aged 16 and over. We don't recommend this event for young children, because we use a variety of scissors and cutting tools for collage.

Your hosts: Immy Smith (aka Lycomorpha, Moths in a Human Suit) and Neile Wright (organiser of Bookface book club and arts fair.) Immy will bring collage material or paint/pencil supplies to experiment with, and Neile will share a paper folding or punching technique.

This workshop is 'pay what you want' - we ask you to contribute to our costs for room hire and refreshments at the Rising Sun Arts Centre, and our materials (all of which are supplied by your hosts) and travel. Suggested donation: £4

If you want to see more artists' books, come and join us for Bookface Art Book Fair on Saturday 14th September, stalls, exhibitions and activities on two floors, 11am - 4pm.
