Royal Berks Hospital Medical Museum

Heritage Open Days 2023

Saturday 16 & Sunday 17 September, 2 – 4:30pm

The museum contains a wide range of exhibits relating to the development of medicine and surgery in general, as well as the history of the Royal Berkshire Hospital. The displays include an iron lung, a Victorian dental surgery, live leeches, anaesthetic equipment, pharmacy, obstetrics, surgery in peacetime and war, fibre-optics, artificial joints and glass eyes.

We are situated off the basement corridor under the original North Block of the Royal Berkshire Hospital, on London Road, Reading, RG1 5AN.

The easiest access is from London Road. Ahead is the original main entrance. As you approach the steps, turn left along the path behind the hoarding, over a small temporary wooden bridge to the corner, where the path turns right and down a few steps towards a pair of large white doors into the basement corridor. The entrance to the museum, a pair of red doors, is ahead, slightly to the left, on the far side of the corridor. Beware of trip hazards.

Parking is available (1) in the main forecourt (2) the multi-storey park off Craven Road (on the east side of the hospital site) or (3) along the adjacent streets. However, there is a charge for all these options.
