Reading Symphony Orchestra

Family Concert

Smetana | Vltava

Rautavaara | Clarinet Concerto (soloist: Nicholas Shipman)

Gershwin | An American in Paris

Williams | Star Wars Suite

Reading Symphony Orchestra returns to the Town Hall for its ever-popular Family Concert.

Based on our Stories in Music theme, you’ll hear the course of the Vltava river in Smetana’s tone poem of the same name, from the two small springs at its source as it meanders through woods and meadows, past nymphs dancing in the moonlight, beneath ruined castles and onwards as it majestically flows through Prague.

The dramatic and lyrical Rautavaara Clarinet Concerto then showcases the full range of the clarinet’s capabilities, and we’re delighted to be joined for this performance by clarinet virtuoso Nicholas Shipman.

You’ll then be transported to the hustle and bustle of the French capital in the Roaring Twenties, complete with taxi horns for Gershwin’s An American in Paris.

And last, but not least, perhaps the best-loved space adventure of them all: music from John Williams’ score for Star Wars. Join us for this fabulous afternoon concert!
