Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, has been home to 39 reigning monarchs. Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it was originally built as a motte-and-bailey and gradually rebuilt over time. It survived a protracted siege in the 13th century and being used as a military headquarters for the Parliamentarians during the English Civil War, before being largely rebuilt again after the Restoration.
