The construction of the Crystal Palace and the Great Exhibition of 1851
The Crystal Palace was originally a temporary structure built in Hyde Park, London to house the 1851 Great Exhibition. It was an entirely new type of public building making great use of iron and glass and it became one of the principal exhibits of the Exhibition.
Later the structure was re-erected in South London and enlarged to become a permanent exhibition space and concert hall. It was destroyed by fire in 1936.
This BIAG talk by Doug Irvine will discuss the design and construction of the building, the Great Exhibition and the legacy they created.
