Berkshire Industrial Archaeology Group
BIAG’s aim is to encourage a wider appreciation of our industrial past and act as a stimulus to the study and preservation of Berkshire’s industrial heritage. We offer our members the chance to attend our regular events and outings and to receive our quarterly newsletter, as well as being able to share time and information with like-minded individuals. When required we undertake preservation and recording projects and work with local and countrywide bodies to protect our heritage.
Industrial archaeology really began in the 1950s driven by a changing landscape which was destroying much of our industrial past and has grown be to an internationally recognised discipline of archaeology influencing decisions made by international bodies like UNESCO World Heritage sites. Industrial Archaeology is both an archaeological study of the ways in which people lived and worked in the past through the physical remains which survive into the present and a conservation movement to protect and interpret those remains. It is impossible to interpret industrial sites and monuments unless they are understood through archaeological and historical study.
It sounds academic but really it is fun. Industrial Archaeology connects you to your community, your past and leaves a legacy for future generations.
