Congo

by doris allimadi

Fifi, a young Congolese woman is sexually brutalised in her own home by two soldiers, one local and one foreign, whilst her husband is at work.  As a result, Fifi begins to suffer from PTSD, including anxiety, nightmares and flashbacks.  She turns to alcohol in an effort to take the edge off.

‘Bang, bang, bang’, who is there, I ask as if I don’t know.  ‘Bang, bang, bang’, they have come for my body, my voice, my dignity.

Her husband Samba blames himself for not having been home to protect his wife, but what could he have done in the face of a barrel and two hungry soldiers?

‘Congo’ not only highlights the plight of Congolese girls and women who have become the battlefield in an ongoing conflict but also puts Congo on the world map for its culture, mineral wealth, food, fashion, music and dance.

Powerful. Gripping. Unmissable.
