The walk traces the town’s evolving landscape of faith from the founding of Reading Abbey in 1121 to the diverse worship spaces of today. We briefly explore the remains of the great medieval abbey that shaped the town’s early identity, visit centuries-old parish churches that weathered the Reformation, encounter the dissenters chapels that tell stories of non-conformity and social change and visit one of Reading's newer religious buildings, the Goldsmid Road synagogue. The walk also highlights modern religious architecture, revealing how new communities and contemporary design continue to shape Reading’s living tapestry of belief. Perfect for history enthusiasts and curious locals alike, this route brings the town’s sacred past and present to life.
Please note that apart from the synagogue, Greyfriars Church and Broad Street Chapel the walk will not visit the interior of any churches. Food and drink are not allowed inside the synagogue.
