Guided tour - learning something new / more talking and less walking
More detail
A circular walk east from Thames Lido along the Thames Path to Thames Valley Park Nature Reserve and back. Walk the story of the Earth from its formation 4.6 billion years ago, the appearance of the first cell of life and its evolution to complex cells and then fish, plants, animals and humans. Each step you take on the walk will be equivalent to 330,000 years. During the walk, we see the many transformations on the planet, through catastrophes such as snowball Earth and the death of the dinosaurs as well as the blossoming of life in its many different forms. All of this gives us a sense of awe and wonder about the Earth and its living systems. We will see how the story can inspire us to live more meaningful lives through themes such as compassion, unity and creativity. And we will see that despite today's environmental challenges, there is hope for the future.
Along the walk, we will also learn about how the Reading chalk was made, how the trees along the route sustain us, and how important water, such as we see in the River Thames, is for the Earth's evolutionary journey. No scientific background is needed, all of the explanations will be simple and accessible. The path can be muddy so walking boots are advised. Rain gear is also advised in case of rain. In case of hot weather, sun protection, a hat, and water are advised. The walk will start and end at Thames Lido which has a bar and restaurant.
