The Work of the South Central Ambulance Service

A talk to Reading u3a by former Reading Mayor Tony Jones

If you’ve ever needed emergency medical assistance in the Reading area you will almost certainly have experienced the work of the South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS). But the 999 response is only one part of the services they provide – they also run the 111 service, support Community First Responders and have a specialist Hazardous Area Response Team specifically trained and equipped to respond to chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear incidents.

Community First Responders make a life-saving contribution to patients in their community who dial 999. There are over 1,000 in the SCAS region, not SCAS staff but members of the public, fire officers, police community support officers and others, all volunteers who undertake training to be able to help the people in the community with the support of SCAS.

Former Reading Mayor Tony Jones, now an SCAS Governor, will explore the work of the SCAS as the guest of Reading u3a. Free entry, non-members welcome. Visit readingu3a.org.uk.
