Beginners' Sewing Course (Feb-Apr)

9-week sewing course for beginners. Learn the basics and much more!

Dates: 5, 12, 26th February; 5, 12, 19, 26th March; 2, 23rd April.

Time: 10:00 to 11:40

Topics covered:

Week 1 - Learn how to thread up and use the machine, do a bobbin, tension, needles, grain on fabric.

Week 2 - Seams: 1cm seam, 2cm seam, French seam, curved seam.

Week 3 - Zips: put in 2 normal zips and 1 concealed zip.

Week 4 - Pleats: box pleat, inverted pleat, knife pleat with top stitching, knife pleat invisible stitched.

Week 5 - Pockets: patch pocket, curved side pocket, straight side pocket, patch pocket with a pleat.

Week 6- Cutting out a pattern and fabric of your choice of a project to work on (You will need to bring your own pattern and fabric.)

Week 7 - Work on your project.

Week 8 - Work on your project.

Week 9 - Finish your project.

This is just a guide of what we will cover in the course. Some topics may carry on to the following week and some weeks we might get through quickly, so we’re move on to the next thing.

This course is taught by Victoria Beaumont of Stitches in Reading. Her instruction is from 10am to 11:40, but you will be able to stay in the space until 2pm practicing what you learnt or working on other projects.

What's included in the price: The instruction, the use of the workstation (no need to bring your own sewing machine!) and the space until 2pm, thread, the zippers for week 3, printed handouts, beverages and biscuits.

What's not included in the price: The pattern and fabric needed for weeks 6 to 9. We can give you guidance on what to buy and where.
