Descendants of the Orange, plus talk by Nick Georges

Join East Berkshire PSC for an evening of film and discussion exploring life, resistance, and resilience in Palestine.

This event will feature a screening of The Descendants of the Orange, followed by a live Q&A with the director. The second part of the evening is a talk by Nick Georges about his experiences as a Humanitarian Witness.

About the Film

The Descendants of the Orange is a deeply moving short documentary that tells the story of a Palestinian family from Nur Shams refugee camp in Tulkarm, tracing their journey from their original village of Sabbarin during the 1948 Nakba to their repeated displacement in the present day.

Through intimate, first-hand testimonies, the film captures what it means to live as a refugee across generations — not as an abstract concept, but as a lived reality shaped by loss, memory, and resilience. The voices in the film speak of homes destroyed, families separated, and the painful uncertainty of being forced to leave again and again, most recently in February 2025.

At the heart of the documentary is the powerful symbol of the orange. Once a sign of abundance and life in Palestine, it becomes a metaphor for everything that has been taken — land, identity, and belonging — while also representing something that endures. As one speaker reflects, “We carry the orange not to eat it, but to bear witness that its tree is still waiting.”

The film also reveals the strength of community within the camps: a place where, despite hardship, people care for one another like family, hold onto shared memory, and continue to hope. It is a story not only of suffering, but of steadfastness — of people who refuse to forget where they come from, and who continue to dream of return.

A talk by Nick Georges – Humanitarian Witness

Nick Georges has been engaged with the Palestinian cause for many years. At just 17 years old, witnessing the refugee camps of Beirut left a lasting impression that placed the القضية (cause) firmly in his heart.

Decades later, at the age of 68, he travelled to Palestine as a Humanitarian Witness. The realities he encountered there — scenes of profound hardship and injustice — have stayed with him ever since, continuing to shape and drive his advocacy.

In this talk, Nick will reflect on his time in Palestine, sharing first-hand experiences of the daily injustices faced by Palestinians. He will also speak about the work he has undertaken to raise awareness, challenge indifference, and contribute towards efforts aimed at ending their suffering.
