Music: A Humanist Perspective

For many people music is a central to their lives. They use music to express or manage a whole range of emotions. How does music work to such powerful effect? Teddy Prout will explore the history and development of music as part of human experience on both personal and societal levels.

Teddy is a classically trained musician and for many years was director of performing arts at a large London Academy. Moving to the charity sector, he led national projects for children and families at Mencap. When Director of Community Services at Humanist UK Teddy managed all aspects of community engagement, including support for partner groups.

Now Director of Learning and Engagement for London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, Teddy and members of the orchestra engage thousands of people in the joy of music-making. Projects include schools’ concerts, family friendly concerts, and encouraging the next generation of musical talent through music education hubs.
