Make Votes Matter
Over 60% of votes in the 2019 General Election in Reading East and West were wasted.
50% of the votes in last year’s Reading Council elections elected 66% of the councillors whereas the other 50% elected only 34%.
What is it about our voting system that makes this happen? Do you feel represented? Is this a good way to run a country? What do you want from a voting system?
Come along, find out, and discuss with Make Votes Matter Reading, a grassroots group of the national campaign for proportional representation (PR).
Liz Carr was jolted into action in October 2022 by the impact on the markets of Kwasi Kwarteng's 'fiscal event'. Following much research and procrastination, she set up MVM Reading. With great luck she found 10 souls with knowledge, experience and oomph. Since then, MVM Reading has raised awareness through discussion, engaging with MPs and councillors, leafleting and social media. Liz works full-time and has lived in Reading for over 30 years.
Andrew Taylor first engaged with the campaign for PR after the 1983 general election when the winning party’s share of the vote fell, but its majority in the House of Commons increased by 235%! He’s campaigned for PR ever since, and is delighted by the impetus, nationally and locally, of Make Votes Matter. He shares Humanists’ desire “to make the world a better place for the current and future generations,” and believes radical political and democratic reform is vital to fulfil this desire. Andrew is retired and has lived in Reading for over 40 years.
