The story of Jacksons Department store by Thomas Macey

Jacksons Department store from 1875 to 2013

Watlington House Garden Hall 14 February 2026 arrive from 1:40pm for the start at 2pm

Come to join members of Reading Civic Society on 14 February in the Garden Hall of Historic Watlington House for their AGM and talk about the ins and outs of  Jacksons Department store  by Thomas Macey.

Jacksons was a well-loved store before it closed on Christmas Eve 2013, the end of 138 years as a family run store.

We are delighted that Thomas Macey has agreed to come to talk to us about the history of the store and his time there. In addition to his “slide show” he will bring a selection of original archives for the audience to view during and after the talk.

Thomas Macey was employed by Jacksons of Reading when he was 16 years old back in 2004 and remained with the company until it closed in 2013. He became a PA to one of the directors and key holder. Thomas was also fascinated by the history of Jacksons and published a book on its history in 2009. When the company closed the Jackson family presented Thomas with the archives of the firm, many of which are now on loan to the Royal Berkshire Archives.  He will display some archive material.

In 2020, Thomas commissioned and worked alongside model maker Richard Ellis of Monks Gate Models to create three miniature models of Jacksons as it was in 1904, currently on display at the Reading Museum which runs until 28 March 2026.

So now is the time to wear those jackets, boots, coats and “other things” which you bought at Jacksons and join us at this event which is being held in the 151st anniversary year of the founding of the store.
