The Great Reading Fight: an incident in the Glorious Revolution of 1688
Heritage Open Days 2023
A presentation in the Garden Hall about The Reading Fight in 1688 when troops loyal to King James II were driven out of Reading by the invading army of William of Orange.
The rear part of GII* Watlington House was built around 1688, the rainwater hoppers highlight this with the initials of the first owners of the house, Samuel and Anne Watlington.
We thought it would be interesting therefore to have a talk by local historian, Mike Cooper, about The Great Fight in Reading in 1688. Whilst this talk has been given previously on ZOOM this is its first outing as a person to person event. Mike's talks are aimed at an audience of curious non-specialists.
As Mike explains:
On Sunday 9th December 1688, troops loyal to King James II were driven out of Reading by the invading army of William of Orange. For over 100 years after the event, Reading’s churches rang their bells in celebration.
Mike's talk will examine what we know of the events of the Fight, its background during the Glorious Revolution, and Reading's reaction.
