Melys: The Wondrous Welsh Indie Band
Formed in the picturesque village of Betws-y-Coed in Snowdonia in the late '90s, Melys quickly became one of the most distinctive voices in Welsh indie music. The band’s sound—hailed by The Guardian as "wondrous Welsh popsters, like Dusty Springfield backed by St Etienne"—blended dreamy pop with an undeniable charm that earned them critical acclaim and a devoted following.
Melys first gained attention after signing with the legendary Welsh label Ankst, known for its roster of groundbreaking artists like the Super Furry Animals and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci. Their early work captured the ears of Radio 1's Mark Radcliffe, Steve Lamacq, and the iconic John Peel, who was an enthusiastic supporter of the band. Over the years, Melys released four studio albums and an introductory compilation, both in Europe and the USA, all while building a reputation for their extraordinary live performances.
In 2002, the band was honored with the Welsh Music Award for Best Live Act, a recognition that cemented their place in the indie scene. They were also a perennial favorite of John Peel, recording an impressive 11 BBC sessions for him and achieving a landmark moment in 2001 when their track “Chinese Whispers” topped Peel’s Festive 50.
After a hiatus, during which Andrea Parker and Paul Adams ventured into the restaurant business and Gary Husband earned his doctorate in academia, Melys returned to the spotlight. Touring the UK with fellow indie icons The Wedding Present, the band reconnected with fans and unveiled a much-anticipated collection: BBC Sessions Vol.1, which features rare recordings from Huw Stephens, John Peel, and Adam Walton.
Now, after over 20 years, Melys are back with a fresh wave of creativity. Their new album, Second Wind, was recorded at their homes and mixed by long-time collaborator and producer Gorwel Owen (Super Furry Animals, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, Gwenno). Set to be released as part of Record Store Day 25 on limited edition orange vinyl, the album has already garnered attention with its first single, “Santa Cruz,” which has received glowing reviews and international airplay. The second single, “Sgleinio” (Shiny), will be released in mid-March 2025.
