The Grand Duke

24 Apr 2025-26 Apr 2025

This is a wonderful opportunity for fans of Gilbert & Sullivan to see The Grand Duke, the most rarely performed of all their operas.

The piece is full of the delightful music of Sullivan at his best, coupled with a typically topsy-turvy plot from Gilbert with tongue-twisting lyrics and plenty of humour. Highlights include The Sausage Roll Song, the Brindisi “Come Bumpers – aye, ever so many” and The Roulette Song.

The delightfully anarchic story is set in the German Grand Duchy of Pfennig Halbpfennig (literally “Penny Ha’penny”) and concerns a theatrical troupe whose members are also conspirators in a plot to overthrow the Grand Duke. The secret sign of this revolutionary association is the eating of a sausage roll!

Other key features of the plot are a betrothal in infancy to a foreign princess, two duels fought with playing cards, four weddings, two (temporary) deaths and the invention of Roulette. How can you resist coming along to see how all of this fits together in one evening?

The experienced members of “Mostly G&S” are really looking forward to presenting this rarity with all their usual energy and enthusiasm.

Book early to avoid disappointment – our last three shows have sold out well before the opening night!
