The Freddie Gavita Quartet: Freddie Gavita, trumpet; Tom Cawley, keys; Daniel Casimir, bass; Mez Clough, drums.
Poll-winning trumpeter Freddie Gavita will be leading his all-star quartet in a tribute to Freddie Hubbard, one of the finest and most influential trumpeters to ever grace the jazz scene. Hubbard blew hard-bop, free jazz and funk. He recorded with Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Herbie Hancock as well leading scores of his own sessions. He memorably appeared in the Great Hall of Reading University in 1966 for a BBC-2 'Jazz 625' recording with Sonny Rollins and Max Roach.
Freddie Gavita fell in love with the trumpet when he was offered the chance to play the brass instrument at primary school. He progressed through local big bands to NYJO (the National Youth Jazz Orchestra) and to study at the Royal Academy of Music.
Winner of the British Jazz Awards 'Best' trumpeter of 2017, Freddie has cemented his place as a leading light on the UK jazz scene. He has been a member of Ronnie Scott's All Stars since 2007. In addition to leading his own quartet, Freddie's recent career highlights include three Proms performances at the Royal Albert Hall, appearing as the featured soloist at Cadogan Hall playing the music of Miles Davis and Gil Evans,, and stepping into Herp Albert's shoes for a recent BBC broadcast from Ronnie Scott's commemorating the music of Burt Bacharach.
A fearless improvisor, 'he solos with fluent authority, his tone ranging from the warmly conversational to the eloquently strident', Freddie is well placed to celebrate the inspirational music and playing of the legendary Freddie Hubbard.
He will be joined by pianist Tim Cawley a composer, arranger, band leader and Professor of Jazz Piano at the Royal Academy of Music, bassist Daniel Casimir (Instrumentalist of the Year in the 2012 Jazz FM Awards) and drummer/multi-percussionist Mez Clough.
An exciting evening of jazz awaits. Please come and enjoy it with us.
