Emilia Hoving, Conductor
Esther Yoo, Violin

Sibelius | Karelia Suite

Bruch | Violin Concerto No.1

Kodály | Song & Intermezzo from Háry János

Bartók | Dance Suite

Under the skilled baton of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Associate Conductor Emilia Hoving, our evening begins in the rugged landscapes of Finland, where Sibelius’ spirited Karelia Suite rings with pride for the traditions, heritage and songs of his beloved homeland. Next, Esther Yoo joins the Orchestra for Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.1, a work that unleashes the full spectrum of the violin, from beautiful melodies to astounding virtuosity, the perfect showcase for Yoo’s mesmerising playing, which has been likened to 'taking her audience into an enchanted garden'.

Finally, prepare to be swayed by the spirit and rhythms of folk music and dance as Kodály weaves traditional Hungarian music into his opera Háry János, a witty interpretation of a comic folk tale, and Bartók captures the irresistible vitality of Eastern European dance traditions in his Dance Suite.
