SITELINES reWATCH: Behind Closed Doors

South Street is very proud to present a filmed version of our acclaimed theatre show Behind Closed Doors.

Conceived & written in 2020 during lockdown #1, and presented either side of lockdown #2 to live audiences, this show was our attempt to make sense of the unique times we were living through. It was made for small audiences of 20 per show who watched in individual covid secure booths. We hope you enjoy this filmed version.

Behind Closed Doors spans centuries to explore stories of isolation and separation. From the anchorite Julian of Norwich to round-the-world mariner Ellen MacArthur to a hillwalking tour guide to the priest of Plague village Eyam, our history is liberally seasoned with times where we've been distanced from each other, whether by choice or necessity.

Weaving these famous figures with everyday folk, like an oil rig worker or a gardener taking care of the plants at The Eden Project, this show illuminates how often we've been here before.

Behind Closed Doors reminds you of the power of theatre to transport, as you head out to sea, up vast hills, into a biodome and 350 years into the past. Join us for a fascinating, illuminating and heartening look at what it means to be alone, and how we can come through it together.

Recorded at South Street Arts Centre on 28 & 29 October 2020.
