Yeomen of the Guard

or The Merryman and his Maid

12 & 13 Nov, 19:30 | 14 Nov, 14:30

Our November show will be that most British of G&S operas THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD, set in the Tower of London itself. This was the eleventh of the fourteen Savoy Operas and both Gilbert and Sullivan bring their very best inspiration and craftmanship to the piece. This work continues to be one of the most popular of all their joint output.

The plot of THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD concerns the warders and other inhabitants of the Tower of London and three outsiders. Colonel Fairfax has been imprisoned and is under sentence of death because of a fabricated charge of Sorcery. Can he be saved from execution long enough for a reprieve from the King to arrive?

Add to the mix two strolling players, Jack Point and Elsie Maynard hoping to earn some income with their jesting, songs and dances. In no time at all, the colourful cast of characters become enmeshed in romantic intrigues and life-saving plots. Although THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD is often described as the most serious of the G&S operas, the elements of romance, deceit and tragedy are mixed with a great deal of farcical comedy, wit and charm.

In response to audience demand, we will be having a matinee performance on the Saturday in place of an evening performance. If you prefer an evening, be sure to book for the Thursday or Friday night.

Order your tickets now for this wonderful example of the entrancing work of Gilbert & Sullivan at the very height of their creative powers.
