An American Mass celebrates the breadth and depth of musical expression of American composers from the 20th and 21st centuries. Comprising a variety of composers, Reading Bach Choir assembles a mosaic mass setting for a cappella choir. This final concert of the season features everything from psalms to spirituals. Movements from the Mass of the Holy Spirit by influential composer and educator Randall Thompson are joined by newer movements from award-winning composer Zanaida Stewart Robles and her Mass in E Minor. Selections from Gregory W. Brown’s Missa Charles Darwin evolves our understanding of the Mass as a genre. The deeply moving Agnus Dei by Thompson’s student Samuel Barber rounds out the concert, along with works by Nico Muhly, Caroline Shaw, Moses Hogan and H.T. Burleigh.
