'Ridiculous technique and harmonic proficiency combined with progressive creativity that sees him leading the charge in terms of new jazz being created in the UK.' Linley Hamilton (BBC World Service)
Alex Hitchcock Quartet: Alex Hitchcock, tenor saxophone; Will Barry, keyboard: Joe Downard, bass; Luke McCarthy, drums.
Since making his first gig as leader at Jazz at Progress in 2017, Alex Hitchcock is now regarded as one of the UK's most virtuosic jazz musicians. A lengthy residency in New York, playing a broad spectrum of jazz, has honed his skills as a soloist, composer and leader still further. A busy man, Alex is in constant demand to appear at major venues and festivals across Europe and the UK.
Alex's regular 'sparring partner', keyboard wizard Will Barry, is similarly 'in demand' and recently appeared at Progress with the innovative band, Empirical.
Another long-term associate, Joe Downard, a leader in hos own right, is the bedrock of the quartet with perfect accompaniment and solo skills to match.
Luke McCarty is new to Jazz at Progress. Though still studying at the Royal Academy of Music he is building a reputation as a drummer 'going places'.
Bring in the New Year with your first jazz gig of 2026. We promise it will be a corker!
