Our journey begins outside the former home of Mary Russell Mitford. The walk then takes us through the town’s literary history, showcasing the works of authors who found inspiration here. Jane Austen’s early education in Reading, Michael Bond’s upbringing in Reading and the birth of the Paddington Bear stories, Mary Russell Mitford’s evocative descriptions of Melford Regis, John Man’s letters to a stranger in Reading. Reading’s influence on literature is far-reaching. Links to T.E Lawrence, Jules Verne, Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens are also included. 
Throughout the walk, discover hidden gems and cultural landmarks, including the historic Reading Abbey, a source of inspiration for artists and writers for centuries. This tour is perfect for lovers of literature, art, and history, offering a unique perspective on Reading’s cultural identity. Our journey ends at Reading Gaol, where the great playwright and poet Oscar Wilde was imprisoned in the 1890s. His harrowing experience inspired the celebrated work, The Ballad of Reading Gaol, which brought international attention to the gaol and the injustices of the penal system. Learn about Wilde's time in Reading and how his legacy continues to resonate today. His story was also the inspiration for a modern art piece by Banksy which can also be viewed at the gaol.
