"My Eye is My Ear, My Hand is My Mouth" - Sign Language Film Club

Join us for the 4th edition of our Sign Language Film Club & Deaf Awareness Event and enjoy a free filming screening of Children of a Lesser God (1986) in American Sign Language (ASL) with English subtitles for people who are Deaf and hard of hearing. The screening will be followed by an optional Q&A.

Children of a Lesser God is a powerful drama exploring communication, identity, and the experiences of the Deaf community. This film challenges stereotypes and encourages empathy, making it a must-watch for students and the younger generation.

The Sign Language Film Club is organised by Ugo Marsili, School Lead of Disability Awareness and Diversity & Inclusion Trainer at the University of Reading. Ugo is an expert in Deaf awareness and audiovisual translation. As a previous BSL student, Ugo established the BSL language provision at the University in 2017, leading a dedicated team that has inspired hundreds of students and staff.

The Club launched in February 2024 as part of the Languages for All programme at the University of Reading. This special gathering aims to foster a deeper understanding of the Deaf community by exploring language, communication, and accessibility.

Don’t miss this opportunity to engage, learn, and celebrate the beauty of BSL and Deaf culture!

This free event is open to everyone. Spaces are limited so please make sure you register to attend in advance. If you have any questions please contact us via community@reading.ac.uk.
