Portrait Drawing from Life

Learn different techniques to draw portraits from a model

Sun 1 Sept, 11:00 - 16:00

In this workshop, you will be introduced to a number of techniques to approach drawing a portrait from life in charcoal. These will include a measured approach and a mass-drawing approach. Whether you are more methodical or regard yourself as expressive, there will be something to enable you to enhance your portrait drawing skills.

The workshop is suitable for all levels and materials are provided. There will be a 30 minute lunch break within the session - feel free to bring packed lunch to the studios.

The workshop will be taught by artist Mick McNicholas with a life model.

Mick McNicholas is originally from Liverpool, now living and working as an artist in Wokingham, UK.

This workshop is for adults. Please note that this workshop needs a minimum number of bookings to go ahead.

Following a successful career as a musician, then as a digital artist, Mick's practice led him to develop his skills in drawing originally as a way to enhance how he made digital works, but as he progressed he rediscovered his passion for producing physical works of Art that actually exist in the world. He has pursued the path of Representational Artist, working across media and primarily from life, ever since.

Despite studying Art & Design Foundation in his youth, and having an MA in Digital Media, Mick is largely self-taught when it comes to representational art. However, he has taken classes and attended workshops with internationally reknowned artists, such as Hollis Dunlap and Nicolás Uribe. He now regularly organises workshops for other international artists, as an extension to his artistic practise.

Mick's drawings and paintings have been exhibited in several prestigious shows (most notably at the Mall Galleries with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Pastel Society, and in the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition), and various group exhibitions around the country, including the New Light Art Prize 2023/2024. Mick currently has work showing in the Venice Biennale.
