APO’s Autumn 2023 concert
Reading’s Aldworth Philharmonic will return to the Great Hall on the University of Reading’s London Road Campus for a concert of music inspired by dancing and storytelling, all connected with a special birthday celebration, on Saturday 21st October, 2023, 7.30pm.
October is Black History Month and works by two black composers feature in the programme, with Florence Price’s Colonial Dance and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s ‘The Bamboula: Rhapsodic Dance for Orchestra’, based on a Caribbean folk melody, providing high-energy dance melodies and imaginative variation.
They are complemented by Malcolm Arnold’s Cornish Dances, chosen as a nod to two long-standing members of the orchestra who hail from the west country. Tom and Caroline Brett are both celebrating a significant birthday this year, so have generously sponsored the concert. Their choice to complete the programme is Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling orchestral showpiece, Scheherezade, named after the storyteller in the Arabian folk tales better known as One Thousand and One Nights.
