Jelly launches new community art project: All Roads - Migration Stories

Jelly awarded grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to record and celebrate women's stories of migration to Reading in a community art project: All Roads - Migration Stories

Jelly is delighted to be supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to record and celebrate women's migration stories to Reading and secure them for future generations of the community to learn from in the form of oral histories and textile art. We are asking women to share the textiles and textile skills that they brought with them when they travelled, to explore the crossovers of cultural making techniques with shared practice. We are delighted to be working with Reading Museum, Reading Community Learning Centre and The Museum of English Rural Life as hosts and supporters. We look forward to hearing the stories from the women attending.

All Roads - Migration Stories

We are looking for women who arrived in Reading from another country between 1940 and 1990 and would like to share their stories for a community art project celebrating the migration stories of women to Reading in the 20th Century.

Do you like crafts, sewing, chatting, making new friends, sharing craft skills?

We would love you to come to one of our groups to share the stories of you and/or your family's journey to Reading and textiles that you brought with you. You can join in or simply listen.

Bring your sewing, knitting, crochet, any craft or just come for a chat.

The weekly workshops will be a welcoming space to share stories, memories, textile techniques and learn from others. You are welcome to work on your own craft or contribute to a collaborative piece.

We will gather the stories and exhibit them at the Museum of English Rural Life in 2025.

Kate Powell from Jelly said: “We are delighted to have received this support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players we can preserve and celebrate the stories from women who travelled from so many countries to settle in Reading which otherwise may have been lost. We will use the textiles they travelled with and create at the sessions to tell the stories”
