Gaia, world famous Earth artwork created from NASA imagery, comes to Reading Town Hall
See artist Luke Jerram’s famous installation Gaia as part of Reading Climate Festival 2023. With surround sound composition by BAFTA award-winning composer, Dan Jones.
Measuring seven metres in diameter and suspended inside Reading’s historic Concert Hall, Gaia features high-resolution NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface.
You'll need to book your timeslot to attend. The Gaia experience will last approximately 30 minutes and slots are every 45 minutes.
- Adults: £2
- Under 14s accompanied by an adult: Free
- All Attendees must have a ticket
The installation creates a sense of the ‘Overview Effect,’ which was first described by author Frank White in 1987. Common features of this experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment. Gaia is a visual representation of the fragility and beauty of the earth. The piece is coming to the town as a call to action for Reading in taking steps to make our town net zero by 2030.
Alongside the installation visitors will be offered the opportunity to sign up to ‘small changes with big impact’ pledges and become part of a community of ‘game changers’ to help protect our planet. Get Involved via whatsonreading.com/climate-pledge
Gaia has been created in partnership with the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Bluedot and the UK Association for Science and Discovery Centres.
