Artist Commission for Prospect Park Mini Golf Art Work
Reading Borough Council Culture Development Team
The Culture Development Team, is a small team that is part of the wider cultural services, which include libraries, Reading Arts, What’s On Reading, the Museum, Reading Venues, Berkshire Record Office and Leisure. The team manage and create projects that deliver social and economic impacts through culture. These projects are delivered in partnership with our local cultural sector, business sector and other RBC services.
Our aim is to demonstrate the power of culture to transform lives, create community, underpin economic growth, and sustain mental wellbeing.
Street Art Commission Aims and Outcomes
Reading Borough Council Leisure team have recently opened an outdoor family mini golf experience at Prospect Park (click here to see more). Its design has been inspired by Reading landmarks including:
- Hole 1: The Kennet River
- Hole 2: Reading Abbey
- Hole 3: Reading Parks
- Hole 4: The Reading Festival
- Hole 5: The Fox Den
- Hole 6: Forbury Gardens
- Hole 7: The Royals
- Hole 8: The Town Centre
- Hole 9: The River Thames
As part of the development of the space and to ensure that it is as welcoming as possible, the Leisure team have asked Culture Development to commission an artist to create a mural inspired by Reading that will compliment the space.
The space that has been identified is as shown in the following image:
The space dimensions are –
The Abbey hole elevation is left to right as you look, 180cm width by 135cm height up to the window protector. The elevation facing us 680cm width with a height up to the windows 135cm, the elevation with the door 385cm (includes door) full height 242cm.
If budget allows we would also like to explore having the boundary wall covered to fit the Reading theme.
Artist Role
We are looking for an Artist or a group of artists to create a mural for the mini golf adventure park that is themed around Reading.
There will be three stages to the commission:
- Artists will be invited to bid for the commission.
- The Culture Development Team will be accepting proposals from artists. (more details on the proposal format below)
- On selection of the successful artist or group of artists, the successful applicant will then be asked to develop their proposal for approval from the Leisure Team.
Available Budget
The Commission amount for this piece of artwork is £2000.
Proposal Content
To apply for this commission the Culture Development team will be accepting proposals from individual artists and groups of artists.
We will be looking for the following information in your proposal:
- Name
- Organisation affiliation (if any)
- Contact Details
- Up to 1000 words on how your design relates to the theme of Reading
- Experience of creating artwork on this scale
- A mock up what your piece may look like
- Any access needs
