Casual House Attendants - The Hexagon

As part of Reading Arts and Venues, The Hexagon theatre is looking to recruit some additional team members to one of our key roles ahead of our busy 2024/25 season. House Attendants are the backbone of the Front of House department and take pride in looking after the safety and enjoyment of the thousands of theatre-goers who visit us each year, as well as the venue itself.

Making events happen involves a lot of people. Our House Attendants facilitate all departments within the theatre working together and provide a warm welcome to visiting artists and theatre companies.

As a House Attendant, you will be flexible and adaptable working with members of the public, the theatre team and everyone in between.

£12.00 per hour | Part time

About the role

Working patterns vary dependant on the show type and programming schedule. Shifts usually fall between 8am and 2am. Most events involve evening work and usually start at either 4pm or 6pm with occasional day shifts for matinees and children’s shows as well as general maintenance. On days where there are no events working hours are between 8am and 6pm.

Rotas are issued 4 weeks in advance around the requirements of theatre events and the combined availability of the team.

This role offers the opportunity to build life skills and develop confidence in dealing with a whole host of situations. No two days are the same

Role responsibilities include:

  • Running Stage Door operations
  • Unlocking and locking up the venue
  • Preparing the theatre for events
  • Carrying out routine maintenance to theatre seating and FOH equipment.
  • Acting as the first point of contact for customers on arrival at the theatre
  • Maintaining a low-key security presence
  • Providing information regarding performances and facilities
  • Selling programmes and merchandise
  • Assisting customers with access and additional needs

Due to the nature of this role and its associated key-responsibilities, you must be at least 18 years of age to your application to be considered.

About you

The position would suit anyone who enjoys a social role, is confident yet sympathetic in dealing with the general public and is passionate about delivering outstanding customer service with a smile. Theatre staff must have the ability to work well under pressure as well as be able to deal with difficult situations in a pro-active and positive manner.

Previous experience in a similar role is preferred but not essential as full training will be provided.
