St Peter's Caversham Conservation Area and Beyond

Heritage Open Days 2023

10 & 13 Sep, 9:50

Join us for this 2 hour wander around the less travelled heights and streets of Caversham led by Richard Bennett of Reading Civic Society & Terry's Reading Walkabouts.

The walk starts opposite to the Crown PH by Caversham Bridge then heads into the heart of Caversham where you will hear about some Listed Buildings and where the old Police station was sited. We pass through Caversham Court Gardens on our way to its restored riverside Gazebo, with the history pavement leading to it. Then we start our journey upwards, passing St Peter's Church, and wonder what Crinkle Crankle walls are for. Then uphill to the Mount and St Anne's Well, a place of pilgrimage in the past. A chance for a breather before finally heading downhill to the centre of Caversham where we see the more recent taller/ narrower buildings.

On our way we stop at the only protected group of terraces in Caversham, what features gave them that protection? We will explain about the Arts and Crafts interiors in a seemingly abandoned former doctor's surgery. Finally, on the level along Church St to stop outside the Carnegie Library with its clock Angel. What was previously on the site of the 1960s St Martin's shopping precinct and why a tunnel below Church Street?
