This is an online illustrated talk, using Zoom, highlighting some of the outstanding, interesting, historical, and sometimes funny memorials found in Reading and the surrounding area. Enjoy this talk from the comfort and safety of your own home.

Please join us as we share with you some of the memorials we have enjoyed finding either for the first time or re-visiting during these peculiar Pandemic times. During our tour we will come across many types of memorial, from the magnificence of the Maiwand Lion in Forbury Gardens commemorating the many soldiers of the Royal Berkshire Regiment who lost their lives during the Afghan campaign (1879-1880) to traditional or not so traditional graves in burial grounds. We will also visit other memorials, some quite prominent and others hidden away from general public view.

Berkshire Family History Society has recorded many of the inscriptions in the Reading area to preserve them for future generations, stone being subject to deterioration due to wind, weather, pollution and the actions of plants and animals.
