Reading Abbey Quarter Tours

3 Jul 2021-30 Oct 2021

Last chance: only two tours left this year!

Abbey days are here again! Enjoy a walking tour exploring the heart of medieval Reading led by our trained volunteer guides. This tour takes you to the highlights of the Abbey Quarter, including the Hospitium where medieval pilgrims stayed, the impressive conserved Reading Abbey ruins and ends in a unique visit inside the Abbey Gateway, the grand entrance to the Abbot’s Lodgings which became Queen Elizabeth I’s royal residence. Have some myths busted and explore the fascinating history of Reading Abbey Quarter, taking in the ancient and modern stories of this centre, from the lives of Medieval monks to the Georgian schooldays of Jane Austen.

Please note that, following the current government's guidance for COVID-19 safety, until further notice the tours will only take place outdoors. We will reintroduce visits to the Museum's galleries and the Abbey Gateway as soon as possible.

Visitors will be asked COVID screening questions on arrival and receive induction relating to COVID measures in place. If a visitor answers yes to any screening questions they will unfortunately not be able to take part in the tour.

All ages,

Every Saturday. 1½-hour tours starting at 11am or 2:00pm. Meet at the statue of Queen Victoria in Town Hall Square, just outside the museum.

Please note that the meeting place and some of the stops during the tour might change depending on the government's guidance for COVI-19 safety in place at the time of your tour.
