Meet the Author
Christy Lefteri - The Beekeeper of Aleppo
Join us for a fascinating talk from author Christy Lefteri as she discusses her life and novel The Beekeeper of Aleppo. Brought up in London, Christy is the child of Cypriot refugees. She is a lecturer in creative writing at Brunel University. The Beekeeper of Aleppo was born out of her time working as a volunteer at a Unicef supported refugee centre in Athens.
Nuri is a beekeeper; his wife, Afra, an artist and they live in the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo. When all they care for is destroyed by war, they are forced to escape and embark on a perilous journey towards an uncertain future in Britain. Nuri is sustained by the knowledge that waiting for them is his cousin and business partner, who is teaching fellow refugees in Yorkshire to keep bees. Moving, powerful, compassionate and beautifully written, The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a testament to the triumph of the human spirit. Told with deceptive simplicity, it is the kind of book that reminds us of the power of storytelling.
