The Nightingale (18)
This challenging and controversial revenge drama from writer-director Jennifer Kent is often ‘exquisitely beautiful’ (Washington Post) whilst remaining an intense and unsettling film about historical injustice and depravity in early 19thC Tasmania. With strong acting from its leads, Kent’s film is unflinching but powerful in its portrayal of some of the worst aspects of colonialism. The film won the Critics’ Prize at Melbourne Film Festival and was awarded the Special Jury Prize at its Venice première.
